A family has escaped serious injury after their home was gutted by a fire inferno in Golden Bay overnight.
Firefighters were called to a home on Yarnrey Street with reports of two properties alight about 11:55pm.
The family of the Yarnrey Street home watched on as their two-story property went up in flames.
Crews arrived to find the house fully engulfed in fire, fueled by wind gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour as a cold front lashed the coast.
Residents from neighbouring properties used their garden hoses to try and stop the fire from spreading.
Thick smoke, flames, and burning embers were blown directly behind which forced residents to flee homes on Yaringa Street.
Neighbours on Yaringa Street told Skeer Media they grabbed what they could and fled.
“I just picked up the dog and ran,” one teenager said.
Its understood the Yaringa Street home, directly behind the main blaze, was sprayed with burning embers which resulted in minor damage.
The Yanrey Street home was completely gutted with DFES estimating the damage bill to be at more than $400,000.
