Search underway after possible shark attack in Esperance

St John Ambulance on standby as crews respond to possible shark attack at Kelp Beds beach in Esperance Western Australia.

Emergency services are responding to a possible shark attack at a popular Western Australian Beach in Esperance.

Authorities received reports of a possible “shark bite incident” at Kelp Beds Beach in Wylie Bay about 10:45am.

Police said a surfboard has been recovered and that they believe the missing surfer is a man.

St John Ambulance said they were on standby at the scene and a search is now underway.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) officers are working with local police and government officials.

There have been two shark attacks at Kelp Beds in the past ten years.

In April 2017, 17-year-old Mandurah girl, Laeticia Brouwer was fatally attacked by a shark while surfing with her father.

In 2014, surfer Sean Pollard lost his right hand and left arm.

Kelp Beds and surrounding beaches have been closed.
