Peel sporting clubs encouraged to apply for healthy eating cash grants

Local sporting clubs have been encouraged to apply for a share of $300,000 to promote healthy eating.

Applications for the winter funding round of the Healthy Sporting Club Program are now open.

The funds help local clubs across the Peel region provide healthier food and drinks.

Grants of up to $4,000 can be used to purchase canteen equipment and train canteen managers on how to provide healthier food and drink options.

Member for Murray-Wellington Robyn Clark has encouraged local clubs to apply for a share in the $300,000.

“Local clubs already deliver so many social and health benefits beyond the playing field,” she said.

“The Healthy Sporting Club Program takes that one step further and is a fantastic initiative to help local sport clubs promote healthy lifestyles to members and spectators.”

In 2019, the program run by Healthway provided $305,826 worth of funding to 86 local sports clubs across the State to help increase healthy options at club-run canteens or kiosks.

Health Minister Roger Cook said sporting clubs are an ideal place to model healthy eating and an active lifestyle on and off the field.

“Through this program clubs have participated in nutrition seminars, and we have helped clubs purchase canteen items to help improve the availability of healthy foods,” he said.

“Congratulations to all clubs that have received funding and good luck to all clubs applying in the current round.”

Applications for the 2020 Winter Healthy Sporting Club program are open from Thursday February 20 to Friday March 13. For more information visit the healthway WA website
