Firefighters have spent the morning battling a bushfire in Barragup.

The fire started along Pinjarra Road near Dunkerton Road after a truck made contact with low hanging powerlines about 11:55am.

Its understood sparks from the fallen powerlines caused surrounding grass and bush to ignite.

Several fire crews, including those from West Murray and North Dandelup, are working to extinguish the blaze.

Authorities were forced to close Pinjarra Road as thick smoke reduced visibility for road users, with drivers told to turn around.

Police have asked drivers to avoid the area.
