Update: Golden Bay man charged after houseboat fire south of Mandurah

Updated:

Mandurah Detectives have charged a man after he allegedly set fire to a houseboat in Bouvard on Wednesday.

Firefighters from Mandurah and Falcon were called to the blaze on Estuary Road about 1am

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said upon arrival crews found an “old houseboat” fully engulfed in flames.

Police said the fire caused the boat to explode and completely gutted the vessel.

The boat’s owner told Skeer Media he heard a loud bang but didn’t think anything of it, given the recent stormy weather, until he saw a bright orange glow.

That bright orange glow was the houseboat on fire, docked at the jetty across the road from his house.

It’s alleged the Golden Bay man also poured an accelerant inside a Ford ute and a ‘granny flat’ at the address.

Forensic Police and Arson Squad Officers spent the morning gathering evidence at the scene.

When asked about the incident WA Police Media spokeswoman Alice Cockram wouldn’t provide details but said “police were investigating.”

Police estimate the total damage bill to be at $24,000, it’s understood the man’s boat wasn’t insured.

The 22-year-old Golden Bay man has since been charged with several offences including:
• Two counts of Criminal Damage or Destruction of Property; and
• One count of Criminal Damage by Fire.

He is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.
