Mandurah businesses have been forced to close on Saturday night after an unplanned power outage left thousands in the dark.

The outage, which happened about 5:15pm, has affected more than 4,300 homes and businesses in the suburbs of Mandurah, Silver Sands, Meadow Springs, San Remo, Parklands, Greenfields and Madora Bay.

Businesses in the Mandurah CBD have taken to Facebook to announce they have ceased trading for the evening or that they’re waiting for power to be restored.

A Western Power spokesperson said the company had crews investigating.

“The cause has not been identified, we have crews investigating and inspecting powerlines in the area,” the spokesperson said.

“We are also looking at the possibility it may be an underground cable fault.

“As we clear undamaged lines, our network operations teams are looking at opportunities to back feed power to customers currently affected by the outage.”

The Western Power website estimates power to be restored about 7:30pm.
