Dangerous police pursuit ends in Mandurah car park

A man has been arrested after dangerous hour-long police pursuit through several Mandurah suburbs on Friday.

About 11:40am, officers attempted to pull over a car of interest in Barragup.

The car, a black holden commodore, had allegedly been involved in series of fuel station drive-offs.

It’s understood, the driver fled police and they lost sight of the Commodore.

A short time later, police were called to a house in Greenfields after a man allegedly walked onto a property and stole the owner’s Mitsubishi Pajero as he worked just metres away.

The owner of the car Paul Williams told Skeer Media the offender caused significant damage to his property.

“My wife was gardening not far from the vehicle.” Mr Williams said.

“He stole the car from the front of my property and instead of going [out the driveway,] he turned around and smashed through six or seven gates.

“Even though you think you’re safe, make sure everything is locked up.

“We’re not insured.”

The Police Air-Wings movements as it tried to keep watch from above.

The pursuit went for more than an hour as the driver drove onto the wrong side of the road, up curves, moved in and out of traffic, side swiped passing motorists and crashed through park bollards.

The police plane and helicopter both tracked the Pajero from the air while police on the ground followed behind from a distance.

An hour later, it all came to an end at the Mandurah Forum underground car park on Pinjarra Road

Witnesses said, the man drove into the car park through the exit from Clarice Street with two flat tyres and fled on foot.

Police engaged in a short foot chase with the man before they arrested him near the K-Mart Tyre Service.

Forensic police gathered evidence from the car.

Mr Williams and his son spent the afternoon changing the tyres on the Pajero so they could get it home.

The offender was taken to Peel Health Campus under police guard.

A 28-year-old Coodanup man has been charged with several offences and is due to face court on Saturday morning.
